How to properly clean your bathroom

Share article

No one looks forward to cleaning the bathroom. But with the right approach (and tools) it doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. Roll up your sleeves and let’s get started.

Shop cleaning

A sparkling bathroom is about more than aesthetics. It’s an important part of keeping your home hygienic and comfortable. It can even give the added benefit of mental clarity. This guide will take you step-by-step through the process of how to clean your bathroom, from stubborn mildew, to freshening up that dusty extractor fan.

How to clean your bathroom floor and walls

Start by sweeping away dust, hair, and other debris. A brush like the CleanStore™ Wall-Mounted Broom makes this job quick and easy, and prevents old dust and dirt from transferring back onto your floors.

Use a mop like the CleanTech™ Spray Mop or microfibre cloth with warm water and a bathroom-friendly cleaning solution. Pay extra attention to corners, as they’re dust magnets and may need a microfibre duster to tackle the dirt more effectively.

For walls, a damp cloth with a gentle cleaner will do the trick. Vinegar works wonders on soap scum. For a deeper, more targeted clean, the CleanTech™ Tile Scrubber will leave your tiles shiny, with little elbow grease required.

The best way to clean your bathroom mirror

Fingerprints, splashes, and toothpaste marks… the bathroom mirror has a lot thrown at it. To get it looking its best, our CleanTech™ Glass Cleaning squeegee is invaluable, as it has two sides, one with a microfibre cloth for cleaning and the other with a squeegee for a spotless finish. Alternatively, washing clean with a microfibre cloth moved in circular motions is a good option, followed by a wipe with a dry cloth for a streak-free shine.

How to get your bath or shower squeaky clean

For stubborn stains in your bath that can’t be removed with bathroom spray, sprinkle baking soda over the stain and spray lightly with white vinegar. Let it fizz for 15 minutes, then scrub with a sponge or washing-up brush. Rinse with water for a sparkling finish.

Showers should be our sanctuaries, but soap scum and grime can ruin the vibe. Mould loves to creep into corners and build up on silicone sealing, so a mould-specific cleaner or bleach may be needed to banish it for good. To tackle mouldy grout lines, use the CleanTech™ Spot Cleaning Multi Tool to get into harder-to-reach places with ease.

Shower heads
A clogged shower head makes for sad water pressure. To get it running as it should:

  • Remove the shower head and soak it in a vinegar-water solution for 30 minutes.
  • Use a CleanTech™ Spot Cleaning Multi Tool to clean out any remaining debris.
  • Rinse and reattach, and your shower head will be good as new!

Fabric shower curtains can go straight into the washing machine on a gentle cycle. Just add a bit of baking soda and vinegar for extra freshness. Glass doors can look grimy fast. Use vinegar and water for daily maintenance, but for stubborn build-up, mix baking soda into a paste and scrub gently. here’s how to clean glass doors in the shower:

  • Spray with vinegar and let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Wipe down with a microfibre cloth or CleanTech™ Glass Cleaning Squeegee.
  • You can then follow with an optional glass cleaner for a crystal-clear finish.

Tackling drains and extractor fans

They’re not glamorous jobs, but you’ll be so glad when you’ve completed them. Clogged drains are unhygienic and frustrating. To get rid of blockages, and speed up your drains:

Unclog drains

  • Pour 1 cup of baking soda followed by 1 cup of vinegar down the drain.
  • Let it bubble for 15 minutes, then carefully flush with boiling water from a kettle.
  • Regularly flush with boiling water and a mix of vinegar and baking soda to prevent build-up in your bathroom sink pipes.

Extractor fans
If you’ve got one, you’ll know how beneficial an exhaust fan is to banish moisture and prevent mould. But they need regular attention, as they can quickly become packed with dust and debris. Here’s how to clean your extractor fan:

  • Turn off the power.
  • Remove the cover and wash it with warm, soapy water.
  • Wipe down the fan blades with a damp cloth.
  • Dry everything thoroughly before reassembling.

FAQs about bathroom cleaning

How to clean your bathroom with bleach

Bleach is great for disinfecting toilets, sinks, and tiles. But it's strong stuff, so it’s not advisable to use it too regularly. You should always wear gloves and ventilate the room when bleach is in use.

How to clean your bathroom with vinegar

Vinegar is a natural hero for tackling grime, soap scum, and limescale. It is also brilliant at giving mirror and glass a streak-free shine. For removing stains, mix with water or salt rather than baking soda as the acid and alkaline of these two ingredients cancel each other out.

How often do you need to clean your bathroom?

Once a week is ideal for regular maintenance, but high-traffic bathrooms may need more frequent care.

How often should you clean your toilet?

Give it a quick clean at least once a week, with a deeper scrub every fortnight.
