Removing dirt, not just diluting it

Until recently, mopping has been a process of pushing dirty water around your home. Traditional string mops and buckets reuse sullied water. When you wring out your mop, you’re spreading bacteria and grime back onto your floors. Along with the hygiene issue, many mops commonly over-saturate floors, meaning they can take hours to dry.

What if we could create a new way to mop? One that keeps clean and dirty water completely separate, and distributes just the right amount of clean water on the mop pad each time. Challenge accepted.

The design process

The design stage of UltraClean spanned the duration of four years. We invested heavily in the prototyping and testing phase of this project, going into great detail to work out what the pain points with mopping were, before we set on our design.

Unlike a conventional mop and bucket, the goal with UltraClean was to develop a product that actually removes dirt, not just dilutes it and moves it around. First, we knew that our new mop would need to have two separate water tanks for clean and dirty water, meaning the two would never touch.

“There’s a real delight factor when using the product. The visible accumulation of the dirty water brings huge satisfaction.”

The anatomy of UltraClean

To ensure clean and dirty water stayed separate, we developed our patented SprayClean™ mechanism. This technology cleans the mop pad as you rinse it, squeezing and scraping away dirty water via a pump, while spraying clean water onto the pad. The dirty water is stored in a collection chamber, making for a visually satisfying experience where you can see the results as you work. The mop pad is only ever refreshed with untarnished water, so you mop clean every time.

The final design

After the development of six prototypes, and multiple rounds of product testing, we landed on our ultimate design. One that brilliantly achieved its goal of separating clean and dirty water into separate chambers, via a self-cleaning mop pad, meaning users mop with clean water, every time. A new all-access rotating mop head with telescopic handle and easy-carry handle for portability add to the finished mop’s user-friendliness.
