Its integrated odour control keeps the kitchen smelling fresh, too.

Specifications
Care & use:
- Use 60L with IW2 and IW6 custom-fit liners (also suitable for use with standard liners)
- External surfaces - wipe clean with a damp cloth and then dry with a soft, dry cloth - do not use abrasive cloths or strong chemical cleaners
- Buckets & food waste caddy - remove from unit and clean with hot, soapy water - wipe dry before replacing in unit (to help remove unpleasant odours, a solution of baking powder and water may also be used)
- Odour filter - for best performance, we recommend replacing your odour filter every 3 months

Lid broken, no spare parts
"I used to love my bins. However, some spring gave in and the lid does not spring open and stays there. I reached out to Joseph Joseph about buying a spare part and there are none. No additional effort to reach out to their manufacturer or any solution to be added. This is so disappointing as it de-valuates the experience and the product."

Good design, but recurring lid mechanism failure
"I really like the overall design of the Totem Max — it’s practical, space-efficient, and the waste separation system works very well in daily use. However, the lid mechanism has been disappointing. This is actually the second unit I’ve owned: the first developed a fault after a few years, and I had seen similar reports of lid issues at the time. I assumed the design would have been improved since then, but unfortunately this second unit failed much sooner — after around 6 months of normal use. The issue appears to be the internal plastic latch, which feels too fragile for a high-use part. I’ve included a video showing the lid not opening when pressed, with a clicking sound from the mechanism, as well as a photo of the broken latch. Customer service was straightforward and the return/refund process was handled well. Overall, it’s a great concept and design, but the durability of the lid mechanism needs improvement for long-term premium bin use."

"Really well thought out. We are a household of two and the 40L works effectively for us. It’s helped with workflow in the kitchen as recycling is such a fundamental part of the day to day. This is our second bin from Joseph. It matches our existing joseph designed general waste bin (we loved the side opening which eliminated the “suction” effect when replacing the bin liners). It’s the little things that are well thought out that make the difference to your everyday experience."
